My Christmas Masterpiece

Every Christmas, I try to incorporate handmade gifts into our giving. I do this because a.)It's personal and special (I hope!) and b.) It saves some $, during a season that can be so commercial and budget-breaking.

Last year I nearly killed myself trying to make almost everything. That, along with a busy shop and a 5 month old (who doesn't really count, 'cause he's about the closest thing to an angel!) about drove me over the edge. I decided I was getting overburdened and missing the point, so this year, I vowed to make just a few very special things, along with buying some thoughtful gifts.

The first thing I made was a new Hawaiian shirt for my dad. This picture is terrible, but it's here to prove that I actually did it...

See the pocket on the front? No? I bet you didn't, cause I matched the fabric seamlessly! (Huffing and wiping fingernails on shoulder... what is that gesture even from, anyway?)

I made a few other fun things, like receipt wallets and cake stands and a card organizer that I was pretty jealous of for myself!
But, the piece de resistance...
The item I spent late nights on...
My labor of love this year was...

A playhouse for my niece, Isabelle!

I came across the idea for a felt playhouse that fits over a folding card table here. 'Cause I'm the DIY sort, I decided to tackle this project on my own without a pattern of any kind. I think it turned out pretty great! =)

Each side is different. This one has an apple tree with removable apples. They go in the basket! (p.s. you can untie and retie the ribbon!)

The birds and the bees!

A window box with removable flowers and a watering can that also comes off (Velcro) so you can water the flowers! I'm pretty dang proud of the wood grain I sewed onto the flower box.

Caden is trying it out. He really likes it!

I think Bella likes it, too!

Although this project was very time consuming, it was definitely a labor of love for my "Nieceypoo." I hope she'll enjoy it for years to come! I have to give credit once more to the inspiration for this project- MissPrettyPretty on etsy, who creates these imaginative and amazing playhouses. She sells patterns so you can make your own as well- but trust me, they are worth every. single. penny if you purchase one already made from her shop.

This new year, I need to make a resolution to update my blog more often! It's been awhile, (which I always seem to be saying...) but I am going to try and keep adding some new information here because...

I am rolling out some new changes to the shop! For the rest of this year, and into the new year, I am planning on completely overhauling my graphic design/logo, etc. I am also planning some changes to my pricing structure and hoping to add some new items to the shop and a new line of non-custom cooties to sell in boutiques, which I get asked about all the time- but have been too stinking busy to even consider. I am also considering getting my own website, instead of selling solely on etsy. Lots of big things happening!

Things were crazy, I mean, absolutely CRAZY during the months of August and September! You'd think June would be busier, but actually, early fall is the busiest time of year for me. This year was no exception and I thought I was going to go insane- but I made it and now this bit of a slowdown in October has been a welcome relief. (I actually dusted my house for the first time in who knows how long...)

So, keep an eye out for all the exciting new things happening here!!!

PayPal Invoices and Credit Card Payments

Many times clients without a PayPal account request to pay via credit card. That's just fine- I welcome credit card payments! These payments are processed securely through PayPal (I am a member) and can be transacted without signing up for a PayPal account.

First, you will receive an invoice via email that looks like this:

Click the yellow "Pay Now" button to continue.

On the next page, review your order total and if all is correct, click the yellow "Continue" button.

Next, you will be taken to a login page. If you have a PayPal account, great! Sign in and complete payment. Otherwise, if you are paying with a credit card, please click the blue "Continue" link next to the credit card logos.

Finally, input your card info, click "Review order and continue" and you'll be all set!

Place Card Name Pricing

If you are ordering place/escort cards and would like me to print/input individual guest names on them, I would love to do so! I offer this service for both printed cootie catchers and DIY .pdf cootie catcher orders. (The price is the same for both, see table below)

I work from your guest list, sent in a formatted excel file (to my stipulations) or from whatever format you have them. There's a price break if you format the file how I need it yourself, but for brides who don't want to worry about this, I am happy to do it for you for a small additional charge.

How I need your excel file formatted:

Helpful Tip-
If you have already gathered your guest info in an excel file, but don't have the data separated into columns like I need, here's how to do it in one fell swoop, instead of manually changing each one:

1.) Determine if you have enough empty columns to spread everything out without overlapping your table numbers, if applicable. If not, move the table column data over far enough to be out of the way. (Highlight then cut and paste- usually 6-7 columns over)

2.) Highlight the data (in one column) that you want to separate.

3.) Click "Data" in the toolbar, and then "Text to Columns"

4.) Select "Delimited Width" for your data type, then click next

5.) Check the box for "Space" as the delimiter you'd like, click next

6.) The default data format should be "General".
Click Finish.
(If you get a pop-up box that asks if you want to replace the content of the destination cells, this means you must not have moved your table numbers over far enough. Click Cancel, or they will be replaced by the name data. If you accidentally clicked OK, just hit undo).

Thanks for taking the time to read through my policies!

PAYMENT
Because my work is completely custom, I require payment in full up front. If this makes you apprehensive, please check out my 100% positive feedback rating from hundreds of clients and keep in mind that I send proofs, offer unlimited revisions and require your final approval before I ever print.

I accept:
Major Credit Cards
PayPal
Money Orders
(from a nationally recognized institution such as the USPS or WalMart, etc.)
RME (Revolution Money Exchange)

SHIPPING
Domestic- I ship all of my US orders via Priority mail with tracking and insurance as a default. I'm willing to change the shipping method to first class (only small orders) or Express (next day) if you let me know and I'll get you a quote. ***Please note that although Priority generally takes 3-5 business days, there is no guarantee of that (as per the USPS)! For this reason, I recommend giving at least 4 week shipping cushion if you can. Please see my lost package policy below for more info.

International- Depending on the quantity, cootie catchers ship first class or Priority Mail. (Order of 25-115 ship Priority. Orders over 115 ship first class) I do this to ensure the best rates for you.
***Please note that all taxes/customs fees are YOUR responsibility!***

With all of my shipping, I do my best to estimate how much it will cost. Sometimes I overestimate and cheerfully refund any extra cost. I hate inflated shipping charges when I shop online and therefore don't do that to my customers, either. (Please keep in mind that my shipping charges do include a small amount for handling.)

Lost/Delayed Packages-I can knock on wood and say I've never had a package go missing anywhere in the world! But I have had shipping delays that can be discouraging to brides on a time crunch, so please be aware that-
I can only account for myself in regards to lead times! I make no promises in regards to transit times, so please order with enough time in advance to allow a shipping delay, should it occur. (ESPECIALLY international customers!) Rest assured that I do promise you will receive your package eventually- I recognize I have a duty to ensure you get what you pay for, I just can't promise when! If you are at all concerned about shipping times, you are welcome to upgrade to a faster shipping service. Just let me know and I'll get you a quote!

I consider a package lost:
US- after 30 business days
CANADA- after 40 business days
EVERYWHERE ELSE- after 45 business days
(Yes, it really can take over 8 weeks for international mail- customs delays is a major culprit)

Should your package be considered lost, I will reprint and ship promptly, shipping by the same method you originally paid for. If you need expedited shipping, the extra will be your responsibility. I also can offer a .pdf of your design at no cost if you'd rather this option instead for reason of a time crunch.

All this sounds kind of alarmist! I actually am very happy with how prompt USPS shipping usually is. I've shipped hundreds of packages and can count any significant delays I've had on one hand. =)

REFUNDS
I'm so sorry, due to the custom nature of my work, I do not offer refunds.

In the case of any errors on printed cootie catchers:
Please remember that I send proofs for your final approval before I ever print. Of course, I am committed to 100% quality work, but if you send info to me misspelled (especially names) and then don't catch it on your proofs, I'm sorry, I cannot be held responsible. I'll happily change the error and reprint at the quantity price for you, though and ship via whatever method you choose at your cost.

If I make an error on your cooties and you do not catch it on the proof, but only when you have them in hand- if it's a proper name (a person, restaurant, city, etc.) I am not responsible. I am actually a spelling geek, but I can't possibly know how every person or place in the world is spelled. It is your responsibility to look over your cootie catcher with a fine tooth comb for errors in proper names.

However, if it's a spelling or grammar error that I made (which means it differs from the text you sent) even though you missed it on the proof, I take responsibility. In this case, I offer three options:
1.) If it's minor and you can live with it, I will refund 15% with my deepest apologies. I will also send you 4 fixed cooties as keepsakes via first class mail.
2.) I will reprint and ship with the original shipping method (again, you pay for expedited if you need it)
3.) I send a fixed .pdf for you to print yourself and refund 10%

Wasn't it just yesterday I found out I was pregnant? When I grabbed my head and squealed in excitement at the doctor's office when the nurse confirmed what I had only dared to believe

Wasn't it just a moment ago that you came into this world with a cry, prompting tears of my own, though they were from pure joy?

Amazing how a tiny little baby can swell such love in a mother's heart! (and Daddy's, too!)

Each precious moment and first has flown by and although you are still a baby, you have changed so much! I love the silly person you are becoming, a little boy full of fun and joy and interest in the world around you!

Truth or Dare Ideas!

How exciting it was, and how fun?

Another fabulous way to use my cootie catchers at your wedding to get your guests having fun and mingling is to have Truth or Dare catchers!

Instead of questions about you as a couple (i.e. How did the bride and groom meet?) have alternating open-ended questions and dares to get your guests having fun and interacting with each other.

EXAMPLE:
Truth: "How do you know the bride and groom?"
Dare: "Ask a stranger to dance!"
(You'll need 4 of each, so 8 total on each cootie)

Or, do all open-ended questions or dares, whatever!

Some Dare Ideas:
Ask a stranger to dance
Do the electric slide/marcarena/bunny hop/hokey pokey, etc.
Pose for a photo

Gorgeous New Papers!

I am soooo excited to now offer these beautifully rich, jewel-tone papers!
When I saw that my supplier was carrying them, I actually shrieked! (I'm proud to shop local!)

The weight on these papers is 28lbs (perfect for cooties!) and they have a slight texture (which you can feel, but not see).

As you can see from the notes on the photo, these papers are better for deeper inks and have an upcharge of $.12 each. These papers are also available in cover stock, which has an upcharge of $.22 each (instead of the normal $.10)

Caden Surgery Update

Thanks so much to everyone who sent kind words/thoughts and prayed for Caden! I'm sorry it has taken me so long to get this update up (but you know me- busy, busy, busy!)

The surgery went fantastic! Caden did super! My nerves were a bit on edge, but I felt God's peace and I know you were praying for this momma! =) The first week of recovery was pretty tough- Caden had to have a catheter and it gave him bladder spasms. I must say that he is quite the little trooper, though- such a good-natured boy!

We have to go back in another few weeks for another checkup to make sure things still look good and are working right. :)

Caden's Surgery

Caden is having his Hypospadias surgery tomorrow (Thursday, June 3) at 7:30am.
I am a little freaked out about the whole thing, but I know that God's got it all under control and the team at DeVos Children's hospital is amazing. If you think of us tomorrow, we would definitely appreciate your prayers for a successful surgery and quick recovery.

For my customers- thanks for understanding that my family comes first and so there may be a slight delay in communication from me. I am taking tomorrow through Monday to be the most attentive mommy I can be and will resume designs and shipping at that time.

All Good Things Must Come to an End

It's so true...

because after much deliberation,
I am no longer offering Table Numbers/
Instruction Cards in my shop.

Not only am I already super busy with cootie orders, but the table numbers were really taking up so much of my time. I've found myself using every spare moment to assemble them, and that's just not the way I want to live my life right now, forsaking these especially precious moments with Caden.

Sorry for any inconvenience to any prospective customers out there who were considering ordering my table numbers! I will be finishing my current orders and then sticking with what I do best- Cooties!

Easter Cuties

We had such a fun time visiting family and getting all three little ones together!

Caden looked so adorable in his little suit coat. What a dapper little man!

I think Isabelle thought so too! :)
And of course, she looked pretty cute in her dress...

...which she had to change out of almost immediately, haha.

Layton, such a sweetie with all that hair! Be sure to take his shirt's advice to heart- "Lock up your daughters!" LOL

I just love this next shot of Layton's feet. Caden and Layton weren't bothered too much by the grass, but Isabelle was having none of it!

Oh, it is just too fun having all three of them so close in age!

Here are some commonly asked questions about my cootie catchers and the ordering process.
Hope these help! If not, please feel free to send me an email (katskrafts{at}yahoo{.}com) or shoot me an etsy convo (katskrafts.etsy.com)

Q.- Does it cost extra for more than one set of questions?
A.- Yes- I charge a flat fee of $10 for each additional set of questions, with the same design layout (i.e only the text is changing, not the graphics, etc.) If you'd like to overhaul the design for each set, the fee is $20 each additional.

Q.- How do Cootie Catchers ship?
A.- US orders ship via USPS Priority Mail with Delivery Confirmation AND Insurance. (International Customers- orders of 115 or less ship via Priority Mail international and orders over 115 ship via First Class mail, in order to save $$$) This is for your special day, and I don't take any chances! =) I ship them in a rigid mailer, which won't fit in your mailbox, so you'll have to make sure to follow the tracking and keep an eye out for them.

Q.- How long does the process usually take?
A.- Lead time on the Cootie Catchers varies depending on the season. In the off season, it is usually around 1.5 weeks, and during the height of wedding season can be up to 3-4 weeks. Lead times are also very dependent on how forthcoming you are in your communication from me, since you supply the customization info and need to approve designs before they go to print. I keep an updated lead time status here on my blog. Click here.

Q.- How far in advance should I order?
A.- I recommend ordering to allow for my current lead time and 4 weeks for shipping. I do so because the USPS does NOT guarantee the Priority Mail timeline. In fact, I have no recourse on the insurance until 30 days have passed with no delivery. For such a special occasion, I'd hate for you to take the risk, but of course, that's your call. I also am happy to offer Next Day shipping upgrades and rush order service for a small fee.

Q- Are they hard to fold?
A.- Well, that all depends on how confident you are! I don't personally think they are all that hard to fold, as long as you are patient enough to learn and have the right tool (a bone folder- $5-10 at craft stores, or in my etsy shop). With every order, I send an extra that has already been folded for you to reference, as well as detailed instructions that include drawings. Be sure to allow plenty of time to fold- don't wait until the night before the wedding! It takes me about 40 minutes of careful folding to fold 25 of them, so plan accordingly.
Of course, I am always available if you need help and I do take folding orders from time to time. Folding is $.75 extra each, and you'll need to contact me ahead of time to see if I can accommodate folding for you.

Q- How long do you keep my file on hand?
A.- I keep custom CC files on hand for 4-6 weeks after completion of order (CC's are shipped out), after which time I delete them, in order to keep my computer storage area from bogging down. If you need additional CC's please contact me before this deadline to get the quantity rate. If you do need them after I have deleted them, I will cheerfully design them again at full price. Thanks for understanding! :) Also, I do photograph some orders for display purposes. If you are opposed to having your custom design used for advertising, please let me know.

Q- Can I order just one to see if I like it?
A.- For sure! There are several listings in my shop for SAMPLE Cootie Catchers. Click here to go to my SAMPLE section. (If it's empty, I may have recently sold out- just convo/email me and I will restock them) The samples are not customized to you, nor can you pick your paper or color ink. But, they give you a great way to hold them in your hands and envision how great yours will look! (If you have a special request for style, you are welcome to ask, and I will do my best to find one in my stock that suits you, but no promises!) Also, I am happy to include up to 5 paper swatches with your sample.

Q- What kinds/colors of paper do you have?
A.- I have a range of more muted color choices in parchment paper, "natural" paper (looks handmade) and "Textures" paper (has a mottled look). I've also recently added a jewel tone collection as well, which has a small upgrade charge ($.12 each- my cost). These 4 kinds of paper offer the stiffest and most formal look. I also have quite a range of colors available in 24lb paper if you are trying to match your wedding colors. You can see all of my paper choices here. Almost all of my papers are also available in 65lb cover stock (cardstock) for a nominal charge of $.10 extra per cootie ($.22 extra for the jewel tone collection.)
If you order a sample and would like some swatches, leave a note in the message to seller section of checkout with the names of the papers you are interested in. I will include up to 5 swatches with each sample purchase. And finally, if you'd like something I don't normally carry, I'm willing to arrange a special order.

Q- Do you have white or metallic ink?
A.- No, unfortunately, I do not have the capability to produce white or metallic inks. I do have a fabulous laser printer, though and the range of crisp colors I can produce is fantastic. :)

Q.- What text can I include in my Cootie Catchers?
A.- I do 4 main types of CC's- FAVORS, PLACE CARDS, PROGRAMS & MENUS. All CC's have 4 outer square corners. Most brides choose to do their names and the date/year on opposite corners. Other ideas include the location, a monogram, your last name, a quote, a heart or graphic- whatever you can come up with!
-For FAVORS, there is space for 8 questions and answers. Don't think you can come up with 8 questions? Don't worry, I have compiled a large list of ideas for you, click here!
-PLACE CARDS are essentially the same as favors, but they have an outer corner or two dedicated to a space for your guest's name/table assignment. I can also print your guest names for you, see my price list here.
-For PROGRAMS, the ceremony information is formatted into 4 main interior sections. These usually consist of- 1.)Order of Ceremony 2.)Parents 3.)Wedding Party 4.)Thank You/Musicians/Officiant, but of course, each cootie varies with each bride.
-MENUS are also fully formatted as programs are, but you can either have questions on the flaps like favors with your menu info in the center, or dedicate the four main interior sections to your menu.
However, it's your event and your Cootie Catcher! They can be as unique as you are. :)

Q.- I've gotta have 'em! How do I get started placing my order?
A.- First, decide on the format you'd like. (Favors, place cards, programs or menus), then the total quantity you need and finally the ink color. Peruse my shop listings- if there's one that fits your needs exactly, go ahead and purchase that one. Otherwise, contact me and let me know what you want and I'll set up a custom listing for you. *If you are choosing something ornate, that's great! But please consider also choosing a complementary block print font for the main body of your text. Does anyone else LOVE bargain hunting? Seriously, I feel so thrilled when I get a great deal and I love telling people about it.

My grandma doesn't agree with this. If someone compliments me on a shirt and I say, "Thanks. Got it on the Kohl's clearance rack for $3.50!" she would probably gasp. (A lady never gives up her secrets... love you Grams! :)

Carter's has recently had their warehouse clearance sale, with an extra 50% of the clearance prices! Caden got so many new clothes, I also bought some for my niece, Isabelle, too. Who could pass up frilly dresses for $2.50?

Anyways, that was some great shopping, but today was the steal of the century! Greg and I have been wanting a GPS for the car for some time, now. We've borrowed a friend's for a few road trips and let me tell, ya, we hardly argued at all! (God had pity on the marriage relationship when he inspired whoever invented this gadget.)

A few days ago, I got a peel off Kohl's coupon. I always get the 15%ers, never the 20% or 30%, so imagine my surprise when it was 30% off! Yay! I started to imagine all the things I "needed." Then, yesterday I got their two-day Valentine's doorbuster ad. It just so happens that a $200 GPS was on sale for $89.99.
That's 55% off already!

Okay, so $89.99.
Less my 30% off, brought it to $65.00.
Then, I had $25 in Kohl's merchandise credits (from Christmas returns)- $40.00
Oh yes, did I mention you get a $20 VISA card in rebate for the GPS?- $20.00
Finally, Kohl's gave me $10 in Kohl's cash for every $50 I spent- $10.00

$10.00

I just spent $10.00, people, and got an awesome GPS!
Beat that!

Cootie Catcher Paper Options

I have loads of paper choices available! There's bound to be something that matches your event colors/theme and if not, I'm always up for special orders! :)

You can click each picture to get an up close view of each set of colors. Please remember that monitors differ, so if you have a question about any of my paper colors, please don't hesitate to ask! I've included some other terms under the color names in an effort to help you identify their true shades. Also, if you are unsure, I would be happy to arrange swatches sent via snail mail.

Please be aware that I print cootie catchers on TEXT weight paper. All of my papers are between 24-30lbs. I personally feel this is the right weight of paper for cooties. Please see my note below if you are interested in heavier stock.

NEW- just added a solid aqua/Tiffany to the Solid Blues!

THIS JUST IN! Jewel Tones!
This gorgeous line just became available. There is an extra charge of $.12 each for these jewel-tone papers. They are 28lb text weight and are usually better suited to darker inks.
NEW- just added a new aqua/Tiffany blue to the Jewel Tone line.

Sometimes brides like their cooties on cover stock (although I don't recommend it). I'm happy to accommodate these orders upon request. There is a $.10 upcharge for cardstock cootie catchers. (With the exception of the Jewel Tone collection, which has an upcharge of $.22 each for cover stock) Unless otherwise marked, all of my paper selections also come in cardstock. In addition to these cardstock choices, I also have:
White Linen
Cherry (a shade of pink)
Buff (a light yellow/gold color)
Salmon
Bisque (off white)

Also, I get asked a lot if I can do white ink on darker paper. The short answer is unfortunately, no. (Which is why you'll notice I don't offer black or very dark papers) White ink is not yet available except in VERY expensive commercial printers. Let's hope they come up with a solution to that soon!

So, I haven't been doing so well with my resolution to make at least one extra meal each week to freeze and use a frozen meal for one week each night to save on $$$, sanity and dishes...

But hey, I've got excuses! The holidays were, of course, super busy with a baby and multiple parties in multiple states, we traveled with two infants to Alabama (in the car!) and I've been up to my EYEBALLS in cootie catcher orders (thank you, REAL SIMPLE magazine. :)

There's always tomorrow...

But seriously, I am going to try to get back on the horse next week. In the meantime, here's a really good recipe for a delicious meal that doesn't work well for freezing, but is simple, and that's almost as good!

Asian Chicken and Rice Bake
(courtesy of Campbell's with a little tweaking by moi)

1 C uncooked long grain rice
4 chicken breasts
1 can Campbell's golden mushroom soup
1 Cup water
1/4 C soy sauce
2 TBSP cider vinegar
(I used red wine vinegar in a pinch & it worked fine)
3 TBSP honey
1 tsp garlic powder
1/2 tsp onion powder
dash salt
dash pepper
paprika
1 can diced water chestnuts, optional

Spray 2 qt. baking dish with Pam. Spread rice in the bottom of dish and place chicken breasts on top. Mix soup, water, soy sauce, vinegar, honey, garlic powder, onion powder, salt and pepper in a bowl. Whisk until smooth and add water chestnuts if desired. Pour over chicken and sprinkle with paprika. Cover.
Bake @ 400 for 45-60 min, or until chicken is no longer pink and rice is tender. Serve with additional soy sauce, if desired.
I think this pairs great with snow or sugar snap peas.

What's New? Cootie CASTOFFS!

Q. What's the result of making hundreds of brides happy with thousands of cootie catchers?

A. A big mess! I print my cooties on 8.5" x 11" paper. After they are trimmed to size (8.5" square), I have leftovers! I could never throw them out, of course, and have been using them for all sorts of things-
---- scrap paper (great for lists!)
---- matchbook notepads
---- color swatches for samples
---- Packaging
But I just can't keep up! These things are multiplying! So I had a great idea...
I could sell them (for practically nothing, of course!) to someone who could use them brilliantly. They would be PERFECT for making homemade paper (wish I had the time...)
Or for scrapbooking (acid, ligning free! =)

Or cutting into strips for quilling...

Making your own notepads...

Shred it and use it for gift bags/baskets!

Any teachers out there? You could do SOOOO much with all this paper!

I'm Making My Life Simpler By...

...making one extra meal to freeze each week, and using a frozen meal once a week!

I started loading up a deep freeze with meals when I was pregnant (nesting, anyone?), in order to make my life easier when Caden arrived. Boy, am I ever glad I did- we actually ate a meatloaf last night that I froze in May! Well, the stockpile has thinned and I am pledging to build it back up.

It's actually pretty simple-
Once a week, I make a dish that freezes well. I just double the recipe (or make the whole recipe, since I usually just halve it for the two of us), bake one, and freeze the other one in a foil baking dish covered with saran wrap and foil. (Bo-nus! No pots/pans on frozen meal nights!) I label a piece of paper with the dish's name and cooking instructions and place it in a freezer bag for extra freshness.

My goal is to work up to two and then three meals like this a week. This will cut the nights I cook dinner from scratch to only 3-4! And, I think it saves money.

Anyone else game to try it with me? I'd love to share recipes/ideas/tips. If so, here's a delicious one to get you started (don't let the name fool you, it's barely spicy)

Jalapeno Chicken Enchiladas
(this recipe makes two 8x8" dishes- one to bake, one to freeze. Double the recipe if you have a larger family and use two 9x13" pans)

-15 oz can tomato sauce
-2 cans cream of chicken soup (can use low fat)
-2 cups sour cream (can use light, not sure about fat free)
-2 jalapenos, seeded and chopped
-2 cups cubed chicken breast
-2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
-12-14 flour tortillas
-Spices: salt, pepper, cumin, onion powder, garlic powder

In skillet, cook the chicken breast in a little oil and season with the spices to taste. Meanwhile, grease or spray with Pam two 8x8" pans. Spread 1/4 cup tomato sauce in the bottom of each. In a large bowl, combine the soup (undiluted), sour cream, jalapenos and 1-1/4 cup of the cheese. Stir in the cooked chicken. Spread about 1/2 cup mixture in each tortilla (I microwave them first to make them a little more pliable to prevent tearing) and place seam side down in the pans (about 6-7 in each pan). If you have any leftover filling, just spread it on top of the folded tortillas. Top with remaining tomato sauce and sprinkle with the remaining cheese. Cover with foil and bake one dish @ 350 for 35-40 minutes, or until edges are bubbly. Let stand to thicken a few minutes. Cover and freeze remaining dish.

*To use frozen: thaw overnight in fridge the day before use. Bake covered @ 400 for 35-45min, or until edges are bubbly.

Coveting Your Prayers...

This is almost too heartbreaking to write...

My sister's dad has been struggling with Mesothelioma for some time and has just taken a turn for the worse. The doctors do not expect him to last more than a week, and definitely not until Christmas. While I know that God holds each of our breaths and our mortality doesn't lie in the hands of men, this is shocking, too heartbreaking to even seem real. Josi is only 18 years old and has 2 younger brothers. I cannot imagine losing my dad, especially around the holidays. Please, please pray for my sister Josi and her dad, Lee.

Specific prayers:

- Traveling mercies for Josi as she travels with her baby (my 4 mo. old niece, Isabelle) in the winter weather (we just got hit with our first snow of the season) from Michigan to Illinois

- Courage and guidance from the Holy Spirit as Josi attempts to share the message of salvation with her dad

- Receptiveness on Lee's part to hear the Gospel and accept Christ's free gift!

- Comfort and peace to Tami (her stepmom) and her two younger brothers (Josh & Jacob) and salvation for them as well.

- That if God wills it, a miraculous healing, or at least one last Christmas together

- Guidance for me and the words to say that will bring comfort to my sister in such a hard time.

Wow- it seemed like it would never happen, but it finally did-
Caden Avery Beyer is here!
Our little angel was born Tuesday, July 14, 2009 at 5:55 pm. He weighed 7 pounds 10 ounces and was 21" long. He came via unplanned C-section due to a few complications- a long labor that wasn't progressing quickly enough, his sunny-side up position, and his dramatically dropping heartrate upon every contraction (poor kid was wrapped too tightly in his cord!)

Wow.

I just can't believe it.

Even though I know I probably won't have the baby tomorrow (but crossing my fingers I do!) it is still amazing that I've reached the end of the "countdown." Tomorrow is July 11, the day I have been waiting for, for almost 9 months!

You know, it's funny, I almost forget what it feels like to NOT be pregnant. Has anyone else ever felt like that? What will it be like when I don't have a child kicking around my internal organs?

And although I know I'll miss feeling him move inside me, I just CAN'T WAIT to hug and hold him outside of me!

This is going to be a summer filled with beautiful babies, as my sister is expecting and due at the end of July and my cousin is also expecting, due September 9! I just can't help thinking of how fun the holidays are going to be when we all get together with the new round of kiddos to love and spoil. (And I do plan on spoiling my niece rotten, just so you know, Josi! :)

Let's all pray that I have this baby, soon, shall we? It's pretty hot in July. =)

The nursery- Sweet Details

Wow, I hope I can remember how to post to my blog...

It's been a long time, lol!

Just a few pics of some sweet details in the nursery-

I painted this shelf myself! On it is his first bear, that we bought before we knew the sex of the baby, when I just wanted to buy SOMETHING! Also on the shelf is a pillow made for him by my BFF Trisha- isn't it too cute? Under the shelf are letters I painted. Originally, I wanted to use his name/nickname if it was short enough, but we hadn't decided yet and so I went with "Baby."

I love the glider chair that we purchased off Craig's List and I recovered/upholstered. The fabric is so cute up close- it's wavy with a lime green background- it matches perfectly! Also there is a pillow I made and a blanket made by baby's Grandma Beyer (super soft and cuddly).

This is the changing table I found on Craig's list for $20!!! I just love Craig's list! Adorning it is one of my favorite details- bunting in matching fabrics made by Trisha. I bought these mirrors at IKEA, like centuries ago, and totally forgot I even had them until we were cleaning out the office to make the baby's room- they matcher perfectly- how cool is that? The little saying, "Sweet Dreams" is from Trish again. Geez, girl! =)

Okay, this is my absolute favoritest thing in the nursery, ever (and not just 'cause I think I did a great job on it, either). I found this quote while searching for words to put on the wall (still to come- I need some inspiration). Even though this quote was too long for the vinyl I have left over from the polka dots, I fell in love with it and decided it needed to be a part of his room, because it's EXACTLY how I feel! A canvas, some paints and ribbon and voila! I adore it and get to look at it every time I change a diaper, as it's hanging over the changing table. (which may be a good thing, especially once I get sick of changing diapers!)

Well, to tell you the truth, the room just isn't done yet. I'm not talking about the trim that still needs to get refinished and installed, or the vinyl words, or the lamp I want to buy for the dresser, or the changing table pad I'm sorely lacking.

Nope.

The sweetest thing that's yet to be added is going to be my son.

My wedding ring's back & a word to the wise...

This is a cautionary tale, my jewelry lovin' friends...

My diamond jewelry, which includes my precious wedding ring, needs to be taken to its respective jeweler every 6 months for a cleaning and inspection. (Upon relating this story to friends, apparently I am the only one who has to do this. It can't just be me- after all, my jewelry comes from 2 very popular jewelry stores!) I do this every October and April. I write it out on my large calendar in big letters so that I don't forget. When the jeweler does these inspections, they fill out a form and put it back in the sleeve or folder to show that you've been keeping your ring maintained so that the lifetime warranty will be good.

Well, along came April and I took until the last week to get around to bringing my jewelry in, but I did and everything looked good.

I've been a little swollen lately in my hands and feet (thank you pregnancy) and so I haven't been wearing my ring. In fact, after we returned from the mall I put it back in my jewelry box for safe keeping.

For some reason, I decided that Sunday to wear my wedding ring, despite its snugness. So, I put it on, and went to church. During our pastor's fabulous sermon, I looked down at my hand and dang it if one of the small round stones surrounding my center stone wasn't missing! (You should've seen me, I gasped audibly and my bible dropped off my almost non-existent lap. I love to make a scene!). Okay, so after I took a deep breath, I congratulated myself for being faithful in my inspections and knew that since it wasn't my center stone, it wasn't the end of the world and my warranty would cover this.

So, Monday I make my way to our local Kay jeweler, explain my problem, and hand over the ring. The worker asked if I was up to date with my inspections. "Of course," I replied and handed her my inspection report folder. A few seconds go by and she tells me that this isn't what she needs. She needs to see my most recent inspection report. Huh? It's in there, after all I just got it inspected the Tuesday before! No dice. Apparently the worker who did my inspection (she must've been pretty thorough seeing as how the prong completely broke off without me even wearing it after she inspected it...) neglected to include my inspection report in my folder when she handed it back to me.

Now, it still was April (for another 2 days only!) so it worked out okay since I was still within my month to get inspected, but what if I hadn't felt like putting it on that Sunday? What if I waited until my preggo hands went back to their normal size in two months? The manager told me they would still have honored it, but I wonder if they would've believed me after that much time.

Anyhow, if I'm not the only person on the planet who is required to get their jewelery inspected, make sure that you check every time that they include the paperwork!

Today I picked my ring up, shiny and new-looking and even though it isn't all that comfy on my finger, I am happy to have it back and will be wearing it on my pinky or around my neck.

a WHALE of a Tote

Have you ever been super proud of something you've done? Like, you can't believe you created something that darned adorable?

You show it off to everyone who will listen and practically give them no other option than to agree that yes, it is darling, and yes, you are so creative and ooooh and ahhhh?

Well, of course I've done this! Here's my latest cute-overload accomplishment-
It's a "Whale" of a tote! Now do ya get my title? Pretty clever, huh? (Apparently this self-absorption applies to more than crafting in my case...)

My bosom buddy Shelly just had her second bundle of joy boy recently and I wanted to send him something unique and fun. So, all it took was a canvas tote bag, some fabric, thread, yarn, ribbon and a button eye to make me swoon over my own creation. (Hoo boy, this was one of those gifts that was really hard to give away when you want to keep it for yourself! I'll just have to make one for my own boy wonder. =)

And of course, I certainly won't protest if you happen to leave me a comment or two about how you LOVE this bag as much as I do! :)

Let's hear it for my man!

My darling dearest painted my toenails for me! Wasn't that sweet? Since it's pretty uncomfortable to try to bend over and do it myself at this point. He did a pretty nice job, too, dontcha think? (at first I wanted purple to match the outfit I wore on Easter Sunday, but I had to rethink that decision...a light pink worked great for his first time ever! =)

So, now I have to apologize for making you look at my bloated ugly feet. Hope you haven't eaten yet today...

What I've Been Up To (the Nursery- Part Deux)

So, I'm sure you've noticed that I haven't been posting lately... (Hey- don't burst my bubble! I'm pregnant and very hormonal- just ask Greg...)

Well, I've been super-duper busy with work, etsy and turning THIS-

into the nursery of my dreams.

It's still a work in progress of course, but here's how it's going:

First, we had the "simple" job of rewiring. Ha! Don't ya just love old houses? Once that was finished (finally!) we had to paint the ceiling and prime (ugh, way stinky!) and then we could get to the fun stuff- COLORS!
The top is a light shade of teal (even though in the pics it looks like seafoam green, trust me, it dried darker)

The bottom is a light shade of green.
(Thanks for your help, Trish and please don't kill me for posting this! =)

The two colors are separated with a chocolate brown stripe (my favorite part, but this took lots of effort with a few hiccups...)

I bought a cheapo light fixture and turned it cute with some brown and white paint. I also bought brown switches/outlets/plates and painted white polka dots on them as well.

Finally, today I added the piece de resistance- polka dots to the chocolate stripe. I think they look just darling!

I've also been working on all of the bedding coordinates for the room. The comforter turned out awesome (if I do say so myself)

and the peekaboo window valance also pleased my critical self! (props to my Grams for teaching me how to sew!)

Still to come- a bedskirt to match the valance, bumper, roman shades, diaper stacker, etc. Oh yeah, and we've got to get all of the door and crown moulding back on (right after we clean up all of the paint left there by the previous owner- that'll be a fun project!)

SOOOOO.... Whaddya think?

Do You Use Reusable Grocery Bags?

If you answered "no" to this question, well then, why ever not?

Maybe you haven't even thought about it, or think it's too much of a hassle, or think they are too expensive, or like the convenience of having plastic bags around the house.

Well, chew on this- Americans throw away over 100 BILLION plastic bags each year! That's plastic that won't biodegrade for centuries, filling up our one and only earth- not to mention the harm it causes wildlife.*

Okay, if you know me personally, you will think this post is coming out of left field- after all, I'm not your average tree-hugger, nor a gung-ho environmentalist. But, I do believe that as a child of God, and one gifted with life on this planet, I am responsible to take care of His creation.

Even if you don't agree with that- I will give you some great reasons to invest in your own reusable grocery bags-

1.) They are cheap. I shop at Meijer, and their blue bags are only $.99 each. I also got a bunch from Walgreen's, when they had a 3/$1 sale on them. I know you can get them at every major retailer. I personally own about 10 bags and I store them in my car trunk so I always have them when I go to the store.

2.) They hold SO much more than an average bag and don't tear when there's a sharp corner shoved in there! I shop for two people each week. I usually have 4-6 bags on average full of groceries. Their handles are also long enough to fit over my shoulder- so instead of 4 trips to the car for the bazillion plastic bags, I can usually get them all in 1-2 trips.

3.) This may seem insignificant to some, but I like how they stand up, like a paper bag does (which by the way, take more energy to produce than a plastic bag, so they are no better in the environmental debate of paper or plastic). The groceries don't roll all over in the trunk, my bread doesn't get squished, nor my bananas bruised.

4.) Just as plastic bags are convenient for hauling stuff, so are these bags, and so much more durable, too. Honestly, I was a plastic bag lover before. I even have a caddy under the sink to store them. But, really, I don't miss the overload I had before. (And we are lucky enough that our recycling service takes these plastic bags).

5.) Your grocery store clerk will not mind, trust me, you won't offend them. Just make sure you put your bags at the front of your order on the belt, so they can load them up as they go.

Baby's Room Sneak Peek

It's our firstborn, so we (read: Trina) would really like our nursery to be special. Doesn't everyone feel that way? From the get-go, I knew exactly what I wanted for the colors/overall look of the nursery. I wanted to make it all myself- nothing premade that every other little tike might have. I didn't want a theme- no monkeys, sheep or trucks for our little prince. I wanted something funky/modern with these colors- Lime, Chocolate and teal/aqua. I wanted circles, polka dots and stripes. Is that too hard to ask for?

Apparently, it is. As soon as I started searching for the fabric of my dreams I realized it didn't exist. (Except for special-ordering from a designer company at $34 a yard plus shipping- yikes!) Actually, more than once I was brought to tears (I'm sure the hormones raging through my body didn't help) with my seemingly endless search for the right fabric. Finally, FINALLY, I found something I could live with and make work for the right price, while searching on etsy.

Though the colors seemed to be green, brown and light blue, I still decided I wasn't going to find anything better and with only 3 months to go, I better get crackin'. So, I ordered some swatches, just to be sure. When they came in the mail- they were the perfect colors! The blues don't seem to show up right on the computer (even in these pics) and are actually teal/aqua. I cried. I mean, I actually really cried I was so happy. (again, thank you hormones...)

Now that these were decided, I thought it would be pretty simple to find a stripe in these colors. Ha! Learn from my presumptions, people! No, I can not find a stripe that matches, even in brown/white, to save my life. So, in an effort to save my sanity, I decided to keep it a little simpler and go with a coordinating brown minky dot fabric:
I've finally designed where everything will go and have ordered my fabric. Yay! Something to cross off the list.

So, that brings us to the next giant aspect of the nursery, the crib. Ugh. This is such a hard decision! We had one picked out from Babies R' Us, but then I decided I didn't like it anymore. We found one at Target that seemed perfect, but it was so short! Then, we found one online, and I loved the overall look, but it was sooooo expensive. The next one was great, but the hardware was showing. Finally, I decided to go with the one from Target (even though I detest this place) and when we went to pick it up with Greg's parents, they didn't have it in stock. (nor did could they order it, nor could they tell me when it would be in. Did I mention I loathe Target?)

Why, oh why, would you do that to an indecisive pregnant woman who has finally made up her mind about something? (You know that sent me on another frantic search for the perfect crib.) Anyhow, in the end, we found that another Target in the area had one in stock and made the final decision to purchase it. And, all's well that ends well, because I LOVE it!

I'm in charge of directions!

Today's the day we prep the room for paint! Surprisingly, I didn't have too much trouble deciding what I want to do with the paint. It came to me in a miraculous epiphany one day. (ha!) You'll have to wait to find out, though- I may just change my mind! =)

My husband's enemy

What is it, you ask?
Bet you'd never guess a mulberry tree.

I'd better start at the beginning:
When we bought this house 6 years ago, we loved how the backyard was framed with 2 trees- a maple and a mulberry. We built a privacy fence, put in a patio, and enjoyed our new sanctuary.
That lasted a year until we decided that all the landscaping must go, to be replaced by new EVERYTHING! (When I say everything- I mean it- not a scrap of grass or rock or anything was saved from destruction and removal). We also installed in-ground sprinkling ourselves. That was a very hot, very dirty summer.

But, the effort paid off. I discovered I've got a really green thumb (outside, that is- don't ask how I kill all the indoor plants...) and Greg discovered he was a lawn man. He really, really, REALLY loves his new lawn. Actually, it caught me pretty unawares that I was now married to "that guy." You know, the one who weeds by hand and yells at neighbor kids to "Get off my lawn!" (Okay, admittedly, he only yells in the house so I can hear- he's never actually gotten their attention.)

So, imagine Grass Guy's reaction when the mulberry tree (and all the birds that love it) kept dropping berries and ummm, droppings on his precious emerald carpet. Every year since then, he has been saying he's going to get rid of that tree. And every year I keep pleading with him not to- it's lovely, gives great shade, frames the backyard in nicely, and brings birds to our backyard utopia. I've won every year so far and he has done his part to rescue his fescue by placing tarps on the ground, getting up in the tree and shaking until the mulberries fall off. He does this several times during the growing season. Once, he actually had his shop vac out there, sucking up all the fallen berries and any crushed ones. We had mulberry wine fermentation scenting up our garage that year. Yuck.

Well, apparantly 2009 was the year for victory over a tree. On the Saturday I got my office moved to the basement, he was determined to cut down (sniff) my tree. He was so anxious to get rid of the poor thing, that this is how he and his friend Jeremy decided to risk their lives in an effort to protect grass-

That's right, Greg is using a reciprocating saw to cut down the tree (he's on the roof of the garage, if you're wondering). And Jeremy is using an extension cord to pull the large branches towards him. When I pulled in the driveway with pizza for lunch, I took one look at their setup and knew I had seen it somewhere before... (Jeremy knew exactly what I was thinking- America's Funniest Home Videos)

After all was said and done, I think our backyard looked empty and sad, but Greg was pretty happy (victorious is probably a more accurate term). And if it prevents him from obsessing just a little bit this summer, I guess that's a pretty good trade-off.

Wedding Place Card Holder / Favor Tutorial

These fun embellished clothespin magnets are the perfect idea; they're super simple to put together and look great!

Materials Needed:

Clothespins

Magnets

Mod Podge

Diamond Glaze (or hot glue)

Decorative paper

Ink Pad

Ribbon (optional)

Scissors/paper trimmer

Small foam brush

Step 1

Trim decorative paper to just smaller than clothespin side. You will need 2 strips of paper for each clothespin. Spread a thin layer of Mod Podge along each side of the clothespin (using the foam brush) and adhere the paper to it, pressing out any air bubbles.

Step 2

Using an ink pad and a light touch, distress the outer edges of the clothespin. Allow to dry.

Step 3

Spread another thin layer of Mod Podge over the clothespin sides, to seal, making sure to cover all of the paper edges. Allow to dry. Apply a second coat, if desired.

Step 4

Adhere the magnet to the back side of the clothespin using Diamond Glaze (recommended) or hot glue. Press firmly until the magnet is secure, or the magnet will be attracted to the metal of the spring and may rip your paper. The best position for ease of use as a magnet is just above the spring. Neodymium magnets offer the strongest pull and can be ordered online from many reputable sellers.

Step 5

Tie ribbon onto the clothespin, or embellish any way you see fit! (Other neat ideas include rhinestones, a monogram, or silk flower with button center.) These work wonderfully as place card holders and are a fabulously fun and functional wedding favor!

Ok, sorry it has been so long since I last posted! We have been so busy working around here on the house (getting ready for baby) and since wedding planning season is in full gear, I have been super busy with the shop.

A Supermarket Secret

Hey, I found something out at the grocery store the other day and I decided I'll share it with you. 'Cause that's what friends are for, right?

It has to do with pickles. So, if you like pickles, read on. (If not, you know you're not going to stop reading anyways, so haha!)

Before I get down to the nitty-gritty, let me just preface this by saying please don't write me off about pickles just because I am pregnant. I like pickles all the time. In fact, once, at a restaurant that had unlimited fries, I asked for a refill on my pickle. No lie. (They actually did it!) And you can also ask my friend Trish, who I once almost throttled because she threw out a large container of perfectly good pickles because she didn't have any room for them in the fridge. Senseless waste, I tell ya.

Okay, so, I have always wondered at the difference between a pickle on the side of your burger at a restaurant and pickles in a jar that you buy at the grocery store. The pickle from a restaurant is so much better- crispy, crunchy, completely yummy. And pickles in a jar are good, too, they are just...different. (In a less good, but still okay way. Did I mention I like pickles?)

So, at the grocery store last Thursday I picked up a jar of pickles and thought nothing of it, until later on, I passed by the refrigerated section, where I spied a sign- "Refrigerated Pickles." Well, before I had always chalked that up to people needing their cold pickle fix in a hurry- nothing I would ever pay extra money for- sort of like refrigerated jello and pudding- I'll eat them at room temp or wait a while before I lay down 50 cents to scratch that itch.

Anyhow, when I got closer, I could see that these pickles looked just like the ones from a restaurant- more white in color than yellow. So, I decided to splurge the extra 35 cents from my other pickle purchase and try them out.

I think you know where this is going...

I will never buy the other kind of pickle again!!!!!

They taste just like the ones from the restaurant. Yum, YUM , yummy yum-yum! So, if you're like minded- make sure to stop by the refrigerated pickle section at your store!

(And, okay, okay, I will admit, that even though my pregnancy hasn't created my love for pickles, it has caused me to eat 2 jars of them since I found them less than a week ago. Fear not, though, I have another jar waiting in the fridge).

Off to eat a pickle! =)

Can I just say that I am sick and tired of everyone's completely judgmental attitude about this woman and her family?

First of all, most of the information has been generated by the media.
The MEDIA, people!
I for one, never trust the spin doctors, especially when it comes to hot button issues.

I've heard all the outrage and the reasons why she shouldn't have done it, she doesn't deserve her kids, taxpayers will have to take care of them all, she's had plastic surgery, 3 of her kids have disabilities already, the hospital bills are piling up, she's soliciting donations, she should be sterilized, etc.

Wow.

Just wow.

Whether I personally agree with her decisions and whether I would have done the same thing in her place-

I just have to share a hilarious new game that friends introduced us to!

It's called Chinese Pictionary!
(Remember Chinese telephone? Well, imagine that and pictionary rolled into one)

One of the best things about it is that all you need is paper and pens/pencils and at least 5 friends. (sense of humor is somewhat optional, as this is guaranteed to make you laugh no matter what!)

Materials:
- some sheets of paper, cut into thirds, long ways (or "hot dog style" as us teachers like to say)
- pens/pencils

Step One:
Each person gets one strip of paper to begin. Everyone thinks of a common phrase/idea and writes it out at the top of their strip. Then, they everyone passes the paper to the left or right, whatever you predetermine before the game begins.

Step Two:
Player 2 reads the phrase, and then illustrates it (as best they can!). Now, this is important- BEFORE passing, Player 2 must fold over the written phrase so that only their drawing will be seen by Player 3.

Step Three:
Player 3 receives the strip, sees Player 2's (lovely) drawing and decides what it must mean. Then, they write out the phrase/idea they think the drawing represents.
Steps Four - ?:
Play keeps on going this way, with each player either writing or drawing in response to the clue they were passed, and folding over the paper so that the next player only sees their response.

As you can see, this one morphed from,
"Drink and be merry for tomorrow we will die,"
to
"Elvis Presley!"

The game is over when you receive your strip back (although it's usually hard to tell by the time it gets around to you! Try writing your name on the bottom of the strip when you begin). I guess there's really no winner to this game, but trust me, you will be rewarded by how much fun it is!

That's right- in just 7 days, we will be going in for our 1/2 way point ultrasound!!!

While we're there, we definitely plan on finding out the sex of the baby! (And until then, it's the battle of the sexes around here- I am all for a darling little girl, and hubby is dying for a little man. =)

So... you wanna weigh in on the issue?
(You got a 50/50 shot- the odds are pretty good!)

And, I don't care if any of you all decide to put some money on it- so long as you split the pot!

ICED TEA or WATER? You decide!

Do you drink enough water?

If you haven't heard (and really, who hasn't?), you are supposed to drink 64 oz of water each and every day!
Now, everyone who knows me knows that I do drink my water. My Nalgene bottle is always at my side (in fact, I just took a chug right now!)

However, a person can get really SICK of drinking so much water.
I've tried crystal light, but it's too sickly sweet for me.
I've tried lemons in the water and that's decent, but still not enough of a change.
I love a recipe from my friend Tina called "Spa Water" (just add sliced lemon, orange and cucumber to a pitcher of water)
But still, people, it's water!

If you have this problem, too- then I've got a super solution for you- ICED TEA!
"What?" you say? "Everyone knows there is caffeine in tea and any drink that is caffeinated cannot count towards your water intake!"

Ha- I thought of that- that's why I use decaffeinated tea bags!

So, if you want to drink something else for a change, stay healthy, and feel a little closer to summer in this bleak midwinter, then follow this (my Alabama grandma's) recipe for perfect iced tea!

QUICK AND EASY ICED TEA

Get yourself a 4 quart pitcher
('cause you know just 2 quarts isn't going to be enough)
10 decaffeinated tea bags
(store brand works just fine)

*Fill your pitcher 1/2 way up with cold water
*Pour that water into a pot and turn the heat on!
*Take out 10 tea bags and remove the tabs at the end.
*Tie all the strings together in a big knot (this will help remove them easier later)
*When water comes to a boil, add the tea bags and remove from heat
*Let tea steep for 15-20 min
*Pour tea (remove bags if you want, but I just leave 'em in) into your pitcher
*Fill rest of pitcher with cold tap water (or, if you're in a real big hurry, empty a few ice cube trays)
*Slice some lemon and enjoy!

P.S. If you add sugar, this does not count towards your daily water goal- try splenda instead.
P.P.S. Okay, if you don't want to buy a new pitcher, just use 5 tea bags instead for 2 quarts.

Where did my baby go???????

My virtual baby, that is!
(Hope I didn't scare you)

For the past week or so, my baby widget down at the bottom has been broken. (At least, I am hoping it is broken. I keep stuffing down the irrational pregnant side of me that thinks it may be an omen.)

The day countdown is right, but there is no baby showing up in the "womb." What is up with that?

Unless I missed the chapter in "What to Expect..." that details the stealth mode of babies during the 16th-17th weeks.

I can't seem to find any information about it anywhere. Evidently, no one else is having this problem, or it was bound to show up on a message board somewhere in internetland. Oh dear.

I tried reloading.

I tried just getting a whole new one.

I tried praying for my baby to come back!

Where is my baby???

Any helpful ideas or comments of reassurance will be duly appreciated.

AMAZING AVGOLEMONO!!! (Greek Lemon Rice Soup)

So... up until this point(16 weeks preggo), I haven't gotten TOO many cravings. The ones I did have were easy to get (popsicles, coleslaw, mint chocolate ship ice cream).

UNTIL... I craved Avgolemono.
If you've never heard of this, it's a Greek soup, with a creamy lemony broth and rice, and sometimes chicken. It is so delicious!

However, here in West Michigan, we do not have Greek restaurants (just one little gyro shack, which is decent, I'll admit, but no soup!) If you are unaware, I grew up outside of Chicago and now since I live in Michigan have had to deal with intense pizza withdrawls, but that's another story.

My favorite Lemon Rice soup comes from The Commander, a Greek mom and pop restaurant back home. Their avgolemono does not have any chicken in it, and yet, EVERY recipe I looked up, included chicken. I was afraid that if I tried it, I would be disappointed that it wasn't the real thing, and I knew I didn't want to disappoint a craving pregnant woman (especially myself).

So... I held out until this past weekend, when we were coming into town for my cousin's high school graduation party. On our way back, my hero, the hubby, ordered 2 QUARTS of the stuff and we picked it up on our way home (as well as a pizza- I will make a heartburn exception for Chicago pizza)! That was Saturday. It is now Monday and I am down to the last drop of the first quart container. 2 quarts may seem like a whole lot of soup to you, but in actuality, it's really only about 6 bowls.

So, now, with the end in sight, my fabulous grandfather has saved the day! He just sent me an email with the chicken-less recipe from Epicurious.com. Thanks, Gramps!!!

And now... in case there is anyone out there, pregnant or not, who cannot get lemon-rice soup... here is the recipe!

4 cups basic chicken stock
6 tablespoons (90 g) Carolina or other long-grain white rice
8 egg yolks
1/4 cup (65 ml) fresh lemon juice
coarse salt, to taste
freshly ground black pepper, to taste

In a medium saucepan, bring the stock to a boil. Stir in the rice and cook until tender, about 8 to 10 minutes.

Meanwhile, beat the egg yolks and lemon juice together in a large bowl.

When the rice is tender, slowly ladle half of the hot broth into the yolks to temper them, whisking constantly. Whisk the egg yolk mixture into the broth and place over low heat. Cook, stirring constantly, just long enough to thicken the soup. Do not boil. Season to taste with salt and pepper.

MOMS- I need your ADVICE!

Calling all experienced mothers out there!

I need some advice,
(being pregnant with my first child and all =)

Firstly, Greg and I are planning on stocking up diapers slowly as we prepare for our darling. So, I would like to know:

*What brands are the best deal/work okay? (I've heard store brand Meijer is cheap but leaky and Target's are pretty good)

*What is a good price?

*What sizes/how long are they in them? I want to buy a few sizes so I can be prepared, so let me know what you think is smart!

Next, (this might be TMI for some people) certain parts of my "upper region" are getting really dry and lotion does not seem to help. Anyone had this happen and know a good cream or something?

On Friday, the hubby and I went to the OB-GYN for our 14 week appointment.

Here's how it all went down:

We were running late and of course, it's snowing like crazy out, but that doesn't deter Greg, AKA Mario Andretti, from driving like a maniac to get us there. But, we made it in one piece (well, two pieces, really) and while registering with the grumpy receptionist, I realized I neglected to bring my urine. Well, since I don't know the meaning of the word propriety, I pretty much shouted, "Oh no- my pee!" This completely mortified Greg, whom I sent on another hair-raising trip back to the house to retrieve said pee. The ever-cheery receptionist was quick to point out that we were already late, but I assured her we only lived 3 minutes away, since my husband is an aspiring stunt driver.

Okay, so if you're wondering why I am bringing my pee there in the first place, it's because (I am told) that urine first thing in the morning is the best to test. (Guess it doesn't matter that I get up 4 thousand times in the night nowadays). So, they give you a little container that you are to "collect" your offering in and bring it in. What they didn't tell me at first is that I have to reuse the container!!! Yeah, the nurse rinses it out and whatnot, but then I have to bring it home and do it all over again next month. I find this repulsive. Anyways, back to the story-

Well, "Bulldog" showed me to be late, by having me wait and wait and wait (in the meantime, Greg made it back with the urine safely in hand, which of course, he immediately pawned off to me, as if it were radioactive or something). But FINALLY, we were able to wait in a room forever and ever.

We were very excited at the prospect of hearing the baby's heartbeat. Our last appointment at 10 weeks was too early. I really wanted to feel more connected, like there actually is a baby in there! Well, our fabulous doctor (Grumpypants could take a lesson from her) placed the doppler on my tummy and we could hear so much! My heartbeat, my placenta whoosh-whooshing, and our baby kicking! In fact, all the kicks were making it hard to hear the heartbeat. So, the doc told me she'd do an ultrasound.

As we waited (so what's new?) in the ultrasound room, I was so nervous and excited. I guess even though I know I am pregnant (boy, do I know!) it still felt pretty surreal that there is a life inside me. Well, when the moment arrived and we saw our little miracle, I was amazed. I didn't cry like I thought I would, just grinned so hard and stared in wonder. Our little darling was kicking with it's long legs and tiny toes and it's arm was draped behind its head, like it was just chillin'. We thought this was cute, because that is exactly how I sleep. Well, we didn't get to hear the heartbeat, but we got to see it, and that was breathtaking, too.

My delicious and semi-famous
Snowball Chipper Cookies

(These are for you if you love coconut and chocolate, AKA- Mounds Bars!)

Ingredients:

1/2 Cup flour
1/4 tsp baking powder
3/4 Cup sugar
1/3 Cup Sour Cream (Go for the real deal, people!)
2 TBSP melted butter/margarine
1 beaten egg white
1/2 tsp vanilla
4 Cups Shredded coconut
1/2 Cup mini Chocolate Chips
4-6 oz semi-sweet chocolate
Parchment Paper
Wax Paper

-Sift flour/baking powder in a small bowl and set aside. In a large bowl, beat sugar, sour cream, butter and egg white. At low speed, gradually add flour mixture, just until blended. Beat in vanilla and coconut. Stir in mini chocolate chips.

-Line cookie sheets with parchment paper and if desired, spray with vegetable oil (Pam). Form 1" balls by rolling coconut mixture and place 1" apart on baking sheet. Hint- dip fingers in warm water occasionally to keep the mixture from sticking to your hands. Also, make sure to pack the balls decently firm, or they will collapse when baking.

-Bake 18-22 minutes in an oven preheated to 325, just until coconut begins to brown. Cool on wire rack.

-Line cookie sheets with wax paper. Melt the semi sweet chocolate and dip cooled balls until bottom 1/4 is coated. Placed cookies dipped-side down on wax paper and refrigerate 30 minutes, until chocolate is set. Enjoy! Also, these cookies freeze beautifully.

WELCOME TO SCRAPAHOLICS ANONYMOUS

"Hi I'm Katrina and.... I'm a scrapaholic."

1.) I admit that I have become powerless over paper, ribbon and cute embellishments.

2.) I believe that a Power greater than myself can restore me to sanity. (Wait.... do I even want to be sane if it means giving up my Cricut?)

3. I made a decision to turn my will and life over to the care of God (even though He's the one who gave me the creativity gene in the first place!)

4. I made a searching and fearless moral inventory of myself. (and came up with more paper than I know what to do with, stamps and stamp pads that haven't even been opened in the years I've owned them, a drawer entirely dedicated to rub-ons, and ribbon coming out of places I won't mention!)

5. I admitted to God, to myself, and to another human being the exact nature of my wrongs. (But my best friend keeps encouraging me anyways...)

6. I am entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character. (Wait a minute... is that really required? Defects of character... really? I thought everyone based their worth on how many scrapbooking tools they had!)

7. I humbly asked Him to remove my shortcomings. (Dear Lord... please help me to never again just dump all my scraps and clippings on the floor while I work until I can't walk away without it all clinging to the bottom of my socks. Please enable me to remember to put the cap back on my glue and find all the eyelets I dropped on the floor that got lost in the scraps.)

8. I made a list of all persons I had harmed, and became willing to make amends to them all. (Oh dear, sweet husband...)

9. I made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others. (Wouldn't everyone be more hurt/injured if I didn't give them cute, personalized cards and scrapbooks to enjoy?)

10. I continued to take personal inventory and when I was wrong promptly admitted it. (Yeah... you're right... that ribbon really doesn't match.)

11. I sought through prayer and meditation to improve my conscious contact with God, praying only for knowledge of His will for me and the power to carry that out. (God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change (the things already glued down), courage to change the things I can (the trashed floor and disorganized paper), and the wisdom to know the difference.)

12. Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, I tried to carry this message to other scrapaholics and to practice these principles in all my affairs. (Well, here it is, other scrapaholics!)

As promised, here are some pictures and stories of the funnier things from our trip!

If you know my husband, Greg, you know exactly why this is hysterical! =)

Incidentally, this vista point overlooking a large lake is where I lost and later found my wedding rings! I had taken them off to put lotion on my hands and set them in Greg's lap. I forgot about them until a long while later, when we were well past this scenic overlook climbing the steep mountain grades. Of course, I was hysterical, thinking they were gone forever, but we drove back to look anyways. Miraculously, I spied them from quite a distance as we were combing the area. It took awhile before I settled down after that!

For some reason, Greg just could not remember to replace the gas cap EVERY time we got gas. Maybe he was just so excited to drive this sporty little G6. After doing this a few times, I finally had to take a picture.
Greg wants everyone to know how fast he got the speedometer needle up to.

Here's us in Virginia City, Nevada. This is an awesome historical old mining town. There are over 400 miles of mines underneath this small city! It really was incredible.
Taking a mine tour. Our guide may have been tipping it back a little right beforehand in the saloon where the mine tour started. There are more saloons than anything else in this town!

This one's for you, mom!

Staying at the Wawona Hotel. It was beautiful, in high Victorian fashion. For this reason, we did not have a bathroom in our actual room. It was 2 floors down.
Hence these robes.
Aren't they sexy?

This next one is the only semblance of civilized plumbing in our room.
If you know me well enough, you know that I always take a trip to the bathroom in the middle of the night. Well, that's pretty scary in the mountains with bears and mountain lions just waiting to devour you!

Here I am picking up pine cones to throw over the bridge and race down the waterfall. What they don't tell you when you buy beautiful pine cones in the store, is that in nature they are covered in barbs and sap, and that's why I am making this face.
Out of pain.

This is me being very angry at Greg for going off without me and hiking to the edge of the icy waterfall. He was constantly doing crap like that, scaring the pants off me!

We got a good laugh out of looking at all the photos where his face is exactly like this! Maybe I'll put a scrapbook together of them. =)
